I fail to understand exclusion of R Ashwin, says Sachin Tendulkar

Skillful spinners don’t always rely on turning tracks, they use drift in the air and bounce off the surface to disguise their variations, says Tendulkar.

Legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar has questioned the omission of R Ashwin from the playing XI against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Oval.

Australia thumped India by a massive margin of 209 runs to win the WTC on Day 5.

“I fail to understand the exclusion of @ashwinravi99 in the playing XI, who is currently the number one Test bowler in the world,” Sachin wrote on Twitter.

Sachin lamented team managment decision to not play Ashwin despite the fact that Australia had five left-handed batter in their playing XI.

“Like I had mentioned before the match, skillful spinners don’t always rely on turning tracks, they use drift in the air and bounce off the surface to disguise their variations,” said Sachin.

“Not to forget, Australia had 5 left-handers out of their top 8 batters,” he added.

Tendulkar heaped praise on centurions Travis Head and Steve Smith, whose magnificent stand of 285 runs built the foundation of Australia’s win.

“Congratulations to Team Australia on winning the #WTCFinal.@stevesmith49 and @travishead34 set a solid foundation on Day one itself to tilt the game in their favour,” he said.

“India had to bat big in the first innings to stay in the game, but they couldn’t. There were some good moments for Team India.”

India, however, has gone 10 years without winning a men’s global trophy, including the first world test final in 2021 against New Zealand in Southampton.
