DC vs MI, WPL Final 2025: Mumbai Indians win 2nd WPL title by beating Delhi by 8 runs

Mumbai Indians have won their second title in the Women's Premier League in three seasons after defeating Delhi Capitals by eight eun in the final!

Charani on strike as Niki can only manage a single. 

11 runs for victory off two balls. 

Niki Prasad throws her bat but misses the ball. DOT BALL! 12 needed from three balls. 

Charani managed to hand strike to Niki, who is batting on 23 and is Delhi's best bet to win a WPL title. 

12 needed from four balls. 

Niki hits the ball to deep mid wicket and the batters take one run. Charani on strike. 13 needed. 

Delhi Capitals need to score 14 runs in the final over with just one wicket in hand. 

With Nat Sciver-Brunt on a hat-trick, Minnu Mani walked out to bat and instantly made an impact with a good-looking boundary.

But her stint in the middle is short-lived as she departs on the next ball itself.

Marizanne Kapp departs for 40 after holing out to Hayley Matthews on the long off boundary. Nat Sciver-Brunt manages to get the wicket that all of Mumbai was hoping for. And the winds have gone out of Delhi's sails! They still needed 27 runs off 14 balls when Kapp lost her wicket.

We're going down to the wire. Marizanne Kapp has scored 39 runs while Niki Prasad is also hanging in there. Delhi need 29 runs from 18 balls to win. 

Until they have Kapp in the middle, Delhi will hope they can win this. 

16th over. Is that a big moment? Marizanne Kapp has had a quite season with the bat, with a highest score of 29* till the final. But she has given Delhi hope here. Two fours and a six in that Saika Ishaque over... and the six was nearly a stunner of a catch by Amelia Kerr at deep midwicket. The ball seemed to be sailing over her for a six but Kerr jumped and plucked the ball out of thin air but as she landed, her feet touched the cushion. The four off the next ball is off a fumble too as Ismail couldn't stop the ball at long off.

Mumbai call Ishaque to bowl the 16th over. And Kapp decides this is the moment to launch an audacious bid to drag Delhi over the finish line. Kapp standing strong in the middle is critical for Delhi's hopes. 17 runs come off the 16th over. At the end of it, Delhi need 35 runs from 24 balls to be the WPL 2025 champions. 

First Kapp hits a four over mid off on the second ball. Then she is caught by Amelia Kerr on the deep mid wicket boundary. But Kerr's momentum carries her over the ropes for a maximum. On the next ball, Kapp slaps the ball straight past the bowler and Ismail stops it, but fumbles and concedes a four!

A mountain to climb indeed for Delhi Capitals here. Especially with the side having lost most of their frontline bowlers.

Marizanne Kapp hits two back-to-back boundaries off Hayley Mathews to give Delhi some much-needed respite after losing six wickets.

More disaster for Delhi as there is a run out as Sarah Bryce walks back for just five runs. There was a mix up in the middle between Bryce and Kapp. The run out comes just when it looked like the Delhi were getting some momentum after Jemi's wicket. They had managed to hit a four and a six in the span of four balls when the run out happened.

Jemimah Rodrigues departs for 30 as once again its Amelia Kerr whose ball does the damage. She induces the top edge from Jemi and then run full tilt before diving and competing the catch herself. That wicket came just when Rodrigues was stitching together a partnership with Kapp in the middle. Jemi is devastated. She's the only batter from Delhi's top 5 who looked like she would cross the 50-run mark.

Another wicket down for Delhi!

Annabel Sutherland tried to step out and take on Saika Ishaque. But instead, she missed the line completely and was stumped. Delhi have now lost their fourth wicket with just 44 runs on the board!

Vinayakk Mohanarangan adds: What a moment for Saika Ishaque! She was arguably the story of the first season, her left-arm spin for Mumbai Indians saw her pick up 15 wickets in 10 matches, and eventually paved her way to play for India as well. But since then she hasn’t found the going easy. This season, she saw U19 squad member Parunika Sisodia play ahead of her in quite a few matches. But back in the main XI scheme of things, she picks up her first wicket of the third season in the final to dismiss Annabel Sutherland.

Jess Jonassen miscues the shot as she tries to slap the ball away to the leg side. It was a googly from Amelia Kerr that she edged and the ball fell nicely into the palms of Bhatia.

After the 5th over where Delhi could once score just one run, Hayley Mathews allows the Capitals to hit their way out of presssure. 15 runs coming off that over! 

Jess Jonassen started the over with two back-to-back boundaries and then we have Jemimah ending the 6th over with a boundary of her own. 

After 6 overs, Delhi Capitals are 37/2

A nervy moment for Delhi at the end of the fourth over. Jemimah Rodrigues called for a risky single and had to dive full stretch to get in the crease safe. 

They're not doing too badly in terms of runs, but those two wickets of both their openers are certainly going to keep them on their toes.

After 4 overs, Delhi Capitals are 21/2

Big early breakthroughs:  Meg Lanning’s hopes of finally lifting the WPL trophy will now depend on the rest of her teammates. The Aussie legend, who got off to a streaky start with an outside edge for four, is dismissed in the 2nd over by NSB, the English star breaching the Australian’s defence. Big celebrations from MI, they know how important it was to break the opening stand. Shafali and Lanning have put together more than 1000 runs in the WPL so far. And shortly after, the fiery Shabnim Ismail traps Shafali plumb in front. The offcutter again from her! Shafali goes across the line (Lanning would have told her to play straight!) and she is not even bothering to review this. Plumbest of LBWS. 

Game on in Mumbai! When asked about her personal form this season in a press conference on Thursday, Jemimah Rodrigues smiled and said: "saving the best for the final.” DC will be desperately hoping that's the case. MI are right on top.

ANOTHER MASSIVE WICKET FOR MUMBAI AS SHAFALI DEPARTS! 

Once again, it was an off cutter doing the damage. While it was Nat Sciver-Brunt who sent home Lanning, this time it is Shabnim Ismail taking the scalp of Shafali Verma as the ball hits her plump on the pads. Shafali does not even bother appealing.

The reaction from captain Harmanpreet Kaur shows just how much that wicket means for the Mumbai Indians. She pulls Shabnim Ismail into a bear hug.

A boundary and then a wicket! Skipper Meg Lanning is bowled by Nat Sciver-Brunt on the final ball of the second over! This is the wicket that Mumbai needed! The offcutter from Sciver-Brunt just nipped inside and missed the bat to clip the leg stump! 

Lanning is gone after scoring 13 runs from Delhi's total of 15 runs. 

Delhi Capitals are 15/1 after two overs.

Delhi started their chase of 150 runs with a boundary, as Lanning edged the first ball from Shabnim Ismail past the slip fielder. Lanning was trying to drive the ball to the ropes but will take the four. 

After 1 over, Delhi are 7/0 

Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma are out in the middle chasing a target of 150 runs. Shabnim Ismail is handed the ball by Mumbai 

Decent recovery: 20/2 after the first 6 overs, 84/1 in the middle phase, 45/4 from the overs 16-20. MI add 129* in their last 16 overs, thanks largely to a superb Harmanpreet Kaur masterclass. Even if this ends in a losing for MI (might not still), Indian fans would be hope to see this form of Harman rest of the year, being the year of a home World Cup and all. MI post 149, a decent recovery that all said and done. Runs on the board in a big final and all that.

So the equation is simple! Delhi Capitals need to score 150 runs from 120 balls.

Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur top scored with 66 runs off 44 balls. Nat Sciver-Brunt was the other significant contributor for Mumbai with 30 runs off 28 balls. The other Mumbai mainstream batters really let the team down. 

For Delhi Capitals, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen and Shree Charani all claimed two wickets.   

Did MI miss a trick? 

As we had mentioned before the match, Harmanpreet Kaur had singled out the name of Amanjot Kaur when discussing MI’s batting depth before the final. But strangely enough, she has been brought in too late, at No 8, below Sajana Sajeevan and young G Kamalini. Did MI miss a plot here? Amanjot could have been a handy partner for Harmanpreet Kaur after NSB and Kerr fell in quick succession.

Kamalini goes for 10 as Mumbai lose 7th wicket with 132 runs on board in the 19th over. 

Harmanpreet Kaur departs for 66 runs off 44 balls after a fantastic innings. She holes out and Marizanne Kapp contributes to another Mumbai wicket, this time in the field! 

She was running out of batting partners in the middle and decided to take the bowler on.

Mumbai Indians have gone from 103/2 to 118/6. Four wickets in just 15 runs, including the captain and talisman who was in fine form. 

Another wicket gone! Harmanpreet Kaur is still out there batting on 62 from 39. But she's running out of partners in the middle. This time it's Sajeevan Sajana who is out LBW. Harman forced her to appeal the verdict but the third umpire found that there was no bat involved and Ball Tracking shows that the ball was clipping leg stump. So it will be an Umpire's Call.

Sajana tried to attack the bowler and ended up losing her wicket instead.

Moment of relief for Sree Charani: It was a big call to bring in the young left arm spinner into the final, but DC took a gamble on Sree Charani. For a while it looked it might be backfiring. NSB took the attack to her, and she had just conceded five wides. But in her 2nd over, she strikes and strikes big! NSB looked to accelerate after going at just over 100 until that point. She swept powerfully and Minnu Mani takes a really good catch at square leg with the ball travelling at some speed. A puff of the cheeks from Sree Charani and she has made her mark.

Another wicket fior Delhi as Amelia Kerr lasts just for three balls in the middle and departs after hitting the ball straight into the hands of Verma.

Nat Sciver-Brunt departs for 30! And the youngster Charani gets Delhi a breakthrough! Charani was being punished by Mumbai in that over, she was hit for a four on the first ball by Sciver-Brunt at deep backward square leg. And then, she gave away four byes with a wide. 

But just when it seemed like another big over was coming Mumbai's way, she managed to get the big wicket of the in-form Sciver-Brunt.

The Mumbai Indians physio has come out and is taking a look at Harman's left knee. She seems to be in some discomfort but looks like she will continue. 

Harman, leading from the front: As the stadium DJ was coaxing the crowd at Brabourne Stadium to chant “Harmanpreet, Harmanpreet”, the camera pans to the Mumbai Indians dugout where G Kamalini and Sajana Sajeevan are seen chanting along with the fans. A lovely moment that. And it’s been that sort of the knock from the MI captain so far too, a fabulous half century with MI under some immense pressure.

What an innings from Harmanpreet. She came in with Mumbai reeling, with two early wickets! And she's just carved out the Delhi bowling attack. Delhi tried bringing in Minnu Mani into hte attack, and Harman hit her for two fours in the first four balls. A boundary was also how Harman got to her 50! 

Just 34 balls it takes her to get to her half century. A captain's innings.

And Mumbai reach 87/2 after 13 overs

More devastation from Harmanpreet Kaur, who welcomes Shikha Pandey back into the attack with a maximum. And on the final ball of the over, it's Nat Sciver-Brunt who find the fence. 

This partnership is going to take the game way from Delhi.

Mumbai captain Harmanpreet is turning the screws on Delhi. She hits Jess Jonassen for three back-to-back boundaries (which could have been worse if she had got under the sixth ball which was a juicy full toss). 

Harman hit the third ball past cover point for a four, slapped the next over extra cover for a four and threaded the gap between cover point and deep cover on the 6th ball for an explosion that Delhi just did not see coming! 

After 11 overs, Mumbai are 66/2

Momentum for Mumbai: After a dreadful start, Mumbai Indians finally starting to make some impact in this final with the bat. First, NSB decides to put pressure on the young Sree Charani, the left arm spinner who was brought in for this final in place of Titas Sadhu. The English superstar has a masterful knack of working the gaps and she hits two well-timed fours. Then in the next over, Harmanpreet Kaur welcomes Sutherland with a six over square leg and the shot of the evening so far, past mid-off for four. MI need much more from their two stalwarts.

WHAT A SHOT FROM HARMAN! 

She tonks the first ball of the 10th over from Sutherland over the deep backward square boundary ropes. And then, two balls later drives the ball with the sweetest timing you will see all evening. The ball just rolled to the boundary like it was rolling on a billiards green. And Mumbai bring up their 50-run milestone. the complexion of the game seems to be changing.

The Delhi Capitals have called in Shree Charani to bowl. And it's the perfect time to get the youngster in that too in a high-stakes final. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, realise that this is the moment that they have been waiting for. 

On the 3rd ball, Nat Sciver-Brunt slices the ball over backward point for a boundary. And on the final ball of the over, she sends it past cover for another boundary. 12 runs coming off that over. 

IS this the moment that Mumbai needed?

After 9 overs, Mumbai Indians are 40/2

POWERPLAY BRILLIANCE: Delhi Capitals have made a brilliant start to the final. 24 dot balls in the first six over with fielding restrictions in place… Lanning wouldn’t have dreamt of a better start. When MI made a slightly slow start in the Eliminator (they were going at run a ball), they went berserk after the powerplay. But GG’s fielding easily contributed a good chunk of MI’s 213 that day. Today, DC’s fielding has been sensational so far. And MI, at 20/2, have been barely able to get going.

Kapp continuing for Delhi. And she ends her four-over spell. And why not, the way she has been bowling, it was fitting that she was asked to continue. And her fourth over yields just two runs. She ends her four-over spell with just 11 runs and two wickets.  

Kapp has Annabel Sutherland to thank for that, with a full-stretch dive to her right from mid-on to stop a certain boundary.

Mumbai are 20/2 after six overs, their second lowest score after the powerplay! 

Kapp has handed them significant blows while the rest of the Delhi Capitals team is doing its bit in the field by keeping runs at a trickle! 

WHAT A CATCH FROM JEMI! 

Jemimah Rodrigues dives forward to send home the other Mumbai opener, Yastika Bhatia, for just eight runs. Kapp has her second wicket of the night. And what will hurt Mumbai even more is that the wicket came on the very next ball after they had found their first boundary of the night. And then, right on the next ball, disaster!

MILESTONE ALERT: The incredible Nat Sciver Brunt becomes the first batter in WPL history to cross the 1,000-run milestone. She was on 997 before today. She has already created another record by becoming the first batter to cross 400 runs in one season. Having said that, she is going to be under immense pressure here to take MI to a defendable score because this has been a sensational start for DC, dismissing the openers for 14/2 in the 5th over.

Mumbai Indians after four overs: 10 runs for the loss of one wicket. AND ZERO BOUNDARIES. 

The Delhi bowling has come to the party, keeping the pressure on the batters. And the fielders are throwing themselves around to keep the ball in the circle! INCREDIBLE. Something's got to give! 

DOT BALL-WATCH 

If you are either a cricket fan or an environmental studies enthusiast, keep an eye on the number of the dot balls being delivered. (For every dot ball bowled, 50 trees are being planted as per the BCCI). Shikha Pandey has bowled the 2nd most number of dot balls in this season. so far, and she starts her first over with FIVE DOT BALLS = 250 trees to be planted somewhere

The in-form Hayley Matthews is bowled by Marizanne Kapp for just three runs after facing 10 balls. A little bit of inside edge and the leg stump is rattled.

Earlier in the same over, Kapp had dropped a hard one hit straight back at her. It was a tough one, but it was a change nonetheless. But she more than made up for it with the wicket of Hayley Matthews. Kapp kept it tight.

Shikha Pandey also bowls an economical over. Just ONE RUN in the over. Both Delhi bowlers getting the ball to move around and not trying to bowl quick. Pandey beat the bat once to fire a warning to the Mumbai batters. 

After 2 overs, Mumbai Indians are 3/0

WPL 2023 to WPL 2025: Two years down the line, it is the same venue and same two teams in action in the finale of the third edition as the first. Interestingly, a majority of the protagonists are also the same. Both teams have SEVEN players each in their playing XIs common to both finals. A mark of the two teams’ consistency. One change from that day in Mumbai to this day, is that Meg Lanning opted to bowl first today. In the first final, she opted to bat first and DC’s batting unit struggled to put up a target on board.

A good first over from Marizanne Kapp. Gives away just two runs. She kept attacking the stumps and the Mumbai opening pair was content to not go for the jugular in the first over itself. There was some nice bit of fielding as well there to stop the shot from Mathews going to the ropes. 

After one over, Mumbai Indians are 2/0

Yastika Bhatia, who has been searching for runs for Mumbai, is joined in the middle by Hayley Matthews. Delhi, on the other hand, have handed the ball to Marizanne Kapp, as expected. 

After losing the toss, Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that they would have liked to bowl first as well. But they wouldn't mind batting first. 

It's a pleasant evening in Mumbai, compared to a few days back when it was sweltering hot. 

So Delhi win the toss and ask Mumbai to bat first! 

While Mumbai have the same XI, Delhi Capitals have opted to make one change to their playing XI: Shree Charani in place of Titas Sadhu.

Meg Lanning wins the toss and Delhi Capitals will bowl first. One wondered if the Australian spirit in her would have wanted to bat first in a big final and apply scoreboard pressure, but she's gone with the trend of the tournament and not trend of the venue. And with that decision at the toss, EVERY SINGLE CAPTAIN in WPL 2025 has won the toss and opted to chase. (All matches at CCI so far have been won by teams batting first though).

In a tense match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Mumbai Indians faced a daunting chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. When Harmanpreet Kaur fell, the momentum shifted, leaving Amanjot Kaur with a crucial task. Harmanpreet’s encouraging words, 'If you stay out there, you’ll be able to do it easily,' fueled Amanjot's determination.

With 22 needed off 12, Amanjot’s two powerful sixes turned the tide, and G Kamalini’s composure sealed the victory. This performance marked a significant moment for Amanjot, who battled back from injury setbacks that had sidelined her from the Indian squad. Her all-round contribution, including crucial wickets and a match-winning batting display, highlighted her resilience.

Amanjot credited her personal coach, Nagesh Gupta, and trainer, Tanuja, for their unwavering support during her challenging recovery. Their dedication proved vital in her return to form. After her player of the match performance that day, Amanjot said she hoped coach Nagesh would sleep well that night. Au contraire. Nagesh Gupta was too excited to sleep, relishing her success and the fulfillment of seeing her shine after a difficult period.

Harmanpreet’s attacking starts: 

In the past few years, Harmanpreet had a set pattern of batting in white-ball cricket. Whether in form or out of touch, she always likes to take her time to get going, playing out a few slow overs to get her eye before taking off. But this year in the WPL she has looked to attack from the word go. The form of NSB ahead of her in the batting order has perhaps even enabled her to take this approach. In the Eliminator, Harmanpreet smashed a 12-ball 36 at a strike rate of 300. "We have a very long batting line-up. We try to add a few young Indian batters who can bat in death overs. So, I think that gives us confidence that I don't need to wait to spend time and rotate the strike and when the right time comes I can go for big shots," said Harmanpreet ahead of the match. She specifically mentioned Amanjot Kaur in that regard.
