Australia opener David Warner bagged the Allan Border medal for the first time in his career at the Cricket Australia awards in Sydney on Wednesday.

He also finished as the Test player of the year while Glenn Maxwell was named the ODI and T20I player of the Year.

Warner winning the medal ahead of captain Steve Smith was a surprise for many. In the voting period, Smith has scored more runs than Warner but the latter finished with 240 votes, 21 more than Smith’s 219.

In the voting period, Warner has scored 1334 Test runs at 60.63.
