Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards will push for the revamp of ODIs in a proposal in which all 50-over games played during a year will give teams points through which they can qualify for a year-end series.
Edwards heads the ICC’s executive committee and his plan also proposes that this points system also be part of the qualification for the World Cup, Sydney Morning Herald reported. Edwards bid seeks to distinguish ODI cricket, which is losing its relevance in non-World Cup years, from T20 and Test cricket.
The points system games, under which ODI cricket will be played will also be branded differently, will be discussed at a meeting of ICC executives in Melbourne on Monday. “I’d like to see a lot more context for 50-over cricket,” Edwards said. “I would call it World Cup Cricket.
We’ve got a meeting on Monday in Melbourne with the ICC and one of the subjects is this. From my point of view this is one of the big strategy items, which is also focused on making the world of cricket better.” The finer details of the plan are flexible, he added.
While the associates nations may feel left-out by the reduction of teams from 14 to 10 for the next World Cup, there could be place for them in a new world of one-day cricket. “Even teams like Ireland have a chance, that would be quite interesting. There (would be) a decent prize at the end of it, a decent lump of money.”
