Shahid Afridi gets pay cut for poor fitness

Pakistan Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi will be docked 25 per cent of his salary for four months.

Pakistan Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi will be docked 25 per cent of his salary for four months for failing to reach a minimum level of fitness, while 40-year-old Test and ODI skipper Misbah-ul-Haq will get a 10 per cent pay rise for having improved his personal fitness.

The Pakistan Cricket Board conducted extensive physiological tests on 28 players earlier this year and the results were made available on Tuesday.

Umar Akmal, Khurram Manzoor, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Irfan and Sohaib Maqsood are among a dozen players whose salaries will be cut by 25 per cent between now and the year end after they fell below the minimum fitness level.

By contrast, batsmen Shan Masood and Umar Amin were rewarded with pay rises of up to 17.5 per cent after becoming fitter, while batsman Ahmed Shehzad and fast bowler Bilawal Bhatti joined Misbah in getting a 10 per cent raise. Azhar Ali, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan were among a group of 11 who maintained their fitness levels.
