India dropped three catches against New Zealand on Sunday during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup in Dharamsala. However, amidst dropping some sitters The men in blue did a few brilliant things with their ground fielding especially when Shreyas Iyer latched on to Devon Conway in the fourth over of the innings to put the Blackcaps on the backfoot early doors.
The Kiwi opener flicked a ball off Siraj on the leg-side which Iyer took a sharp catch fielding at square leg inside the ring. The ball was travelling quickly to him and the effort left Conway stunned. For his brilliant catch, Iyer would be later awarded with the Best Fielding Medal.
Iyer with his medal joins Virat Kohli, Shardul Thakur, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja who have won the same in the earlier games for India.
“One guy was like a fish in the water, natural and swift just outstanding started with some brilliant catch at square leg and finished off some outstanding stops out there, especially in the field Shreyas Iyer,” the Indian fielding coach T Dilip would say.
Indian star player Virat Kohli too was electric on the field on the day. He took a good catch of Mark Chapman in the final overs of the innings. It was a catch which showed the game awareness of the player and that wicket started the collapse in the final overs for the Kiwis. “Not to forget a player who had a spring in his feet taking all the catches running around Kohli,” T Dilip said.
Though Siraj has not plucked any stunners he too was giving his full commitment on the field. T Dilip said, “I think one guy today, he’s been showing his commitment on the ground and today was another display of his brilliant attitude I really like, especially because he still yet to set the stage in the tournament with his main skill but he never let that affect his fielding whenever he was on the field during the spells, as soon as he finished his bowling, he has to come back and get bowling- Mohammed Siraj”
