The third round of the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 starts on Friday at the Resort Rio Convention Centre in Arpora, Goa, with 10 Indians still left in title contention.
Five Indians — D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna, Diptayan Ghosh, and Karthik Venkataraman — directly qualified for the third round after scoring 1.5-0.5 in their two classical matches in the previous round, whereas the five other Indians — R. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Pranav V, Pranesh M and SL Narayanan — joined them in round 3 after fighting for their spots through the tiebreaks.
A total of 24 Indians were part of the 206-player field. Seven were eliminated in the first round, and seven more crashed out of the event in the second round. The biggest upset was the elimination of Nihal Sarin, who suffered a shock loss from Greek GM Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis, who previously eliminated Divya Deshmukh in the first round.
