Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said criminal cases should be registered against the ruling front legislators and the minister who had insulted women legislators of the Opposition during Friday’s ruckus inside the state Assembly.

Achuthanandan said the Opposition would go to any extent to bring those UDF legislators before the law. By indulging in such heinous attacks against woman, the UDF legislators have tarnished Kerala’s image, the veteran leader CPI(M) leader said.

Achuthanandan was referring to the conduct of Minister Shibu Baby John, MLAs Shivadasan Nair and M A Vahid towards the LDF’s women legislators during the chaos that ensued when K M Mani was presenting the state budget. John was seen physically blocking E S Bijimol and Nair was bitten on his shoulder by Jameela Prakasham, when she was pushed by the former. Vahind had allegedly targeted K K Lathika.

Prakasham said Nair touched her with a sexual motive, and she would complain to the police against him.

Meanwhile, Kerala on Saturday observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal, called by CPI (M)-led LDF in protest against the attack on their legislators. Stray incidents of violence and attacks on vehicles were reported. As the hartal was announced on Friday evening, hundreds of passengers taking long distance trains were stranded in several railway stations in Kerala.
