The Rajasthan unit of the BJP on Friday came out in support for Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who is embroiled in a controversy after former IPL chairman Lalit Modi revealed documents that purportedly show her secretly supporting his bid to obtain UK immigration papers in 2011. Addressing a press conference, BJP state president Ashok Parnami said, “Chief Minister Raje has clarified that she doesn't know any such document. We don't know what Lalit Modi has given to media.” Documents released by a PR firm, acting on behalf of Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi, suggest that Raje, who was then the state opposition leader, specified that she supported “any immigration application that Lalit Modi makes, but do so on the strict condition that my assistance will not become known to the Indian authorities”. Questioning the Congress' motive of raising the issue ahead of Bihar Assembly elections, Parnami said, “Why is Congress raising this issue ahead of Bihar polls. Why didn't the UPA government or the Ashok Gehlot government act when in power.” Parnami also defended Raje's son Dushyant Singh who is under attack over reports that his company received investments from Lalit Modi. Parnami said all his transactions are legal and that the Income Tax Department was dept kept in the loop.
