BJP national vice-president C P Thakur Saturday kicked up a controversy by saying that reservation should be “done away with”. LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, who is in the NDA alliance, differed with Thakur and said any leader making such statements did not “have understanding of reservation”.
Thakur said: “The system of reservation should be done away with. It was initially given only for 10 years but was extended.” He was responding to questions on Congress favouring increased reservation for some deprived sections.
Paswan promptly reacted: “Any leader who makes statement on reservation system may not have basic understanding of the subject. Reservation is needed for social and economic parity.”
AICC Bihar in-charge Satyavrata Chaturvedi said Thakur’s statement “exposed anti-Dalit mindset of BJP”. He said: “We have favoured reservation in the past and will continue to do so.”
