“The BJP has betrayed the people of the country in general and those of Assam in particular,” said Bora.

Five months after he quit the BJP for complaining against the “style of functioning” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah, former BJP national executive member and founder national convenor of the party’s IT cell, Prodyut Bora on Friday formally announced forming a new party called Liberal Democratic Party.

“The Liberal Democratic Party is essentially a local party of Assam. But it will surely expand its base across the country if the need arises,” said Bora, who claimed that the people particularly of Assam were fed-up with the BJP and Congress. “The LDP will focus on the Congress party’s corruption and the BJP’s betrayal,” he added.

“The BJP has betrayed the people of the country in general and those of Assam in particular. The people of Assam are looking for an alternative. Our party will campaign against the BJP and of course against the Congress,” said Bora, the first-ever IIM graduate to have ventured into politics. In February, when he quit the BJP, Bora had alleged that many BJP MPs and MLAs in Assam were remote-controlled by the Congress party.

When asked in how many seats his party would contest in the forthcoming 2016 Assam Assembly Elections, Bora said it will depend on the situation. “I won’t guess a figure now, but we will sure make an impact in the elections,” he claimed. In February, he had accused both Modi and Shah of being arrogant, and had said that the situation had reached such a stage that no cabinet minister, national officer bearer or MP could muster courage to question Modi.

Stating that his party’s ideology was based on economic and social liberalism and social democracy, Bora said only a multi-pronged approach could pull Assam from the kind of morass it had sunk into. “Therefore it has mandated its leadership to create a network of frontal organisations that penetrate society from multiple directions, and work to create trust and self-confidence among people,” he said. The LDP had already constituted its women and youth wings, he informed.
