As a fresh diplomatic row erupted between India and Canada after Ottawa accused Indian “agents” of collaborating with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to target pro-Khalistan elements in Canada – allegations New Delhi dismissed as “preposterous” – Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring described the issue “a matter of deep concern”. In an interview with The Indian Express, Warring spoke about the row and its “connection” with the jailed gangster. Excerpts:
What is your reaction to the Canadian allegations?
I am not pro-Khalistani and purely Hindustani but these accusations are a matter of grave concern. As things are unfolding, people have started believing that there is something fishy happening between the agencies and Bishnoi.
Why do you think so?
Despite television interviews being aired while he was lodged in prison and his gang claiming responsibility for singer Sidhu Moosewala’s murder, Bishnoi was projected as a Hindustani and gau bhakt (cow worshipper) while attempts were made to tarnish Moosewala’s image.
Now, (three-time MLA and NCP leader) Baba Siddique has been murdered. Bishnoi is treating jail like home and must be taking pride that Canadians and Americans are discussing him even while he is lodged in jail.
The Indian government has strongly refuted the allegations…
What else can they do? While Bishnoi wears branded clothes in jail, he attracts gullible and poor youth through social media but the government does not want to act on this.
Even as the Punjab police denied that Bishnoi’s interview happened in the state, the truth about it came out only after the Punjab and Haryana High Court took cognisance of it. Despite this, no exemplary action has been taken against police officials.
