Jagan Reddy granted bail after 16 months in jail

Jagan’s release from jail on Tuesday will not only revive the fortunes of his party but also give a new thrust to politics in Andhra Pradesh at a time when the state has been boiling over the bifurcation issue.

He is sure to emerge as the undisputed leader in coastal Andhra-Rayalaseema regions in the prevailing political scenario as YSRC has already been espousing the cause of a unified state, observers say.

Despite a strong movement for a unified state, the Seemaandhra region has clearly been devoid of a leader and Jagan, political analysts believe, could now emerge as one.

Jagan, however, has to first deal with some internal issues related to YSRC.

By taking a pro-united AP stance,YSRC has been virtually reduced to a nothing in Telangana region.

Even in Seemaandhra, all is not well within the party with factionism ruling the roost in many districts.

Jagan’s absence for close to 16 months from the public domain has virtually left YSRC rudderless, though his mother Y S Vijaya and younger sister Sharmila sought to hold the party mantle firmly.

It may be a while before Jagan could actually go to the public in a big way as one of the bail conditions bars him from moving out of Hyderabad.

Nevertheless, the mood in YSRC is upbeat as its leader is out of jail.

During his 485-day stay in Chanchalguda prison in Hyderabad,Jagan had met not only his family members but also political leaders of various hues and it was from there that he guided the party leadership on every issue.

From day one of its inception in March 2011,YSRC had been a favourite to do well in elections, particularly in Seemaandhra region.

Jagan’s popularity graph had soared,in tandem with his ‘Odarpu Yatra’,the tour he undertook to console the families of those who died after his father and the then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s death in a helicopter crash on September 2,2009.

But,following his arrest on May 27,2012 in the disproportionate assets case,it saw a downward trend though YSRC managed to win about 15 assembly and one Lok Sabha seats in by-elections last year.

YSRC also saw large-scale influx of MLAs and leaders from TDP and Congress.

But his prolonged stint in jail also caused a little decline in Jagan¿s as well as YSRC’s image though the party still appeared to hold an edge.

By championing the united AP cause,YSRC hopes to consolidate its position in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, its perceived strongholds.
