Democracy dead in DMK, says Alagiri

A sitting MP from Madurai, Alagiri has said he will not contest this time.

Suspended DMK leader M K Alagiri refused to go down without a fight Saturday, charging the party leadership of favouring the rival faction headed by his younger brother M K Stalin. “Democracy is dead in the DMK,” he said, adding that he would reveal more in Madurai on January 31.

A day after he was suspended from all party posts on disciplinary grounds, Alagiri denied he had any plans to field rebel candidates in the Lok Sabha polls. “They will lose on their own,” he said.

He said he was suspended for questioning irregularities in the conducting of internal elections.

When he met Karunanidhi Friday, he demanded to repeal the action against five of his men. There was nothing wrong in putting up posters — the charge against his supporters — he said, pointing out that there were posters that called Stalin the next president, CM and the future of DMK. “Why hasn’t there been any action against anyone?” he asked.
