The Congress is set to welcome former Khammam MP Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and ex-minister Jupally Krishna Rao, both earlier leaders of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), into party ranks at a grand rally in Khammam Sunday, to be attended by Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier this week, 35 leaders, including Srinivasa Reddy and Krishna Rao, had announced their intention to join the Congress. The rally dubbed Jana Garjana or ‘People’s Roar’ where they will be inducted will coincide with the conclusion of a ‘People’s March’ by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and will be attended by the top party brass.

Apart from Rahul, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC in-charge of Telangana Manikrao Thakre and Telangana PCC president A Revanth Reddy will be present, along with other leaders. The party, which has gone all out to mobilise crowds from Khammam and neighbouring Mahabubabad district, is expected to give a glimpse of its promises for the coming Telangana elections at the rally.
The Karnataka win has lent a new spring in the Congress steps in Telangana, with the BJP – after looking like the primary opposition party taking on the ruling BRS – suddenly playing catch-up.
The Congress has high hopes of boosting its chances in Khammam district with Srinivasa Reddy’s entry; the venue of Sunday’s rally is grounds owned by the senior leader. In 2014, Reddy had won from the Khammam Lok Sabha seat on a YSRCP ticket, but joined the BRS later. The BRS did not nominate him for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and, earlier this year, he was suspended for anti-party activities.
Sources said Srinivasa Reddy was being wooed by the BJP also, but after the Congress’s win in Karnataka, he swung towards the party.
CLP leader Vikramarka will mark the completion of his yatra at the meeting venue, after spending nearly 1,200 km and just over 100 days on the road.
The MLA from Madhira constituency in Khammam district, Vikramarka, 62, began his foot march on March 16 from Pipri village in Adilabad district as part of the Congress’s ‘Haath se Haath Jodo’ campaign, launched in the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s cross-country Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Vikramarka later renamed the yatra as “People’s March”.
TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy, who has already reached Khammam for the rally preparations, said the party will formulate its election manifesto based on the inputs Vikramarka gives as he had interacted with many people during the padyatra.
