A 43-year-old under-trial prisoner died in Tripura allegedly after falling to the ground floor from the first-floor stairs at a correctional home in Sepahijala district Tuesday.

The police said Babul Das had been ill for some days and fell from the stairs of the first floor of the central correctional home at Bishalgarh around 12.25 pm. He was first taken to an inhouse medical facility and later to the Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital, where he was declared dead, said the police.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (law and order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said a case of unnatural death was registered at the Bishalgarh police station and the postmortem would be conducted soon.

A case was lodged at West Agartala women’s police station under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 (murder) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), and he was arrested. He was sent to the central correctional home on July 15.

Meanwhile, the superintendent of the central correctional home wrote to the Bishalgarh sub-divisional magistrate Tuesday requesting to make arrangements at Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala for the postmortem and inquest after the arrival of Das’s family members.
