In an effort to tap into the renewable energy sector in keeping with the focus laid on the sector during the last G20 meet held in Tripura, the ruling BJP-led government in the state has laid emphasis on producing power using solar energy and has set a target to generate 500 megaWatt power by 2030 using solar energy.
Speaking at the inauguration programme of the 33 KV Lembucherra sub-station Friday, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the state government is taking initiatives to avoid any kind of problem in power production if coal and gas gets depleted in the future.
He said, “We don’t have coal, gas is depleting. We don’t have sufficient water except in the Gomati River. Power cannot be produced based on this river. We have to be dependent on renewable energy forms like solar. Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has asked Union Power Minister (R K Singh) to fix a target of producing 500 megaWatt power from solar energy in Tripura by 2030.”
He added that the state government has sought help from the Asean Bank of Development so that double power can be produced using the same gas through the latest technology.
Lashing out at the erstwhile Left Front government, Nath said, “They failed to provide food, clothing and houses to the people during their reign but the BJP-IPFT government has fulfilled the promises given to the people before coming to power, including the Rs 2000 allowance and others.”
“Earlier, only three per cent of houses had water connections. Now, 69 per cent of houses have already been covered. The Lefunga block is already covered. Is this happening anywhere in India? Only in Tripura,” he said.
