Amidst Opposition allegations of police inaction and political pressure on the force, Tripura Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan said Monday that crime has been at the lowest in the state in the past decade.

Ranjan’s comments came as several incidents of ethnic and communal violence in Gandatwisa of the Dhalai district, Jirania in the West Tripura district, and Kadamtala and Pekucherra in the North Tripura district have been reported in the state in the last few months.

Referring to the series of violence in the state, CPI(M) leader Jitendra Choudhary and other senior Congress leaders have said the police failed to uphold their image before the people and needed to ensure prompt action to ensure law and order.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Police Commemoration Day event in Agartala, Ranjan said allegations of police inaction and bias are the results of organised efforts of vested interest groups to tarnish the Tripura Police’s image and spread misinformation.

Emphasising the police’s strong commitment to maintaining law and order, Ranjan said Chief Minister Manik Saha has given them a free hand to take action against lawbreakers and to ensure law and order. “Some vested interest groups are trying to spread rumours about the deterioration of the law and order situation. However, the truth is that data from the last 10 years show that crime in all major categories is at its lowest this year,” he said.

Referring to the recent Lok Sabha elections and a series of festivals, the Tripura DGP said all these events passed off peacefully. He said any effort to foment unrest was swiftly addressed, adding that senior officers and additional security personnel were deployed to restore law and order.

Anurag Dhyankar, former director general (Intelligence), who joined the event with Ranjan, also stressed the state police’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
