Eighteen post-graduate medical interns launched a cease work at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Agartala Friday over ‘non-payment’ of stipend for the last five months.

The trainee doctors or medical interns also protested on the hospital premises demanding that the authorities clear their pending dues immediately. The protesters said they have been working in the hospital for nearly two years and they usually received their stipend within two to three months.

“We have not been getting our stipend for the past five months in IGM hospital. In other hospitals, the stipend is regularly paid every month. We came here from different states to pursue postgraduate courses. We are contacting the health secretary and our administration every three to four days. But they are not taking any initiative. They are just… avoiding our problem,” said one trainee doctor.

“There are many who came from other states. They are not able to pay their house rent. The house owners are telling them to vacate the rented premises. They are not even provided with hostel accommodation. Where will they go? We have decided to discontinue duty from today (Friday)… We had tried our best to contact everyone so that they could solve our problem, but no solution came through,” he added.

“The chief minister is himself a doctor. He can understand it. We are hopeful that the CM will help us. If your father asks for Rs 5,000 and you can’t give it, then what is the use of becoming a doctor? It’s better to open a paan shop, at least I shall earn Rs 500 daily,” said Dr Goutam Prasad, an intern who hails from Assam.
