Shortly after he was booked for the alleged online harassment of a married woman, CPI(M) Bamutia MLA Nayan Sarkar Wednesday filed a counter complaint and challenged the woman complainant to show evidence or face defamation charges.

The woman from West Tripura district earlier filed a complaint stating that the CPI(M) MLA had over social media chats asked her about her husband’s professional details, places she had visited outside Tripura and also offered her to accompany him for a day in Guwahati.

The woman complainant further claimed that she declined the offer but the MLA threatened her and her husband over the phone.

Responding to her allegations, MLA Sarkar said, “If there is any truth to her allegations, she can produce the phone call record. Alternatively, the cybercrime cell of the police can also obtain this evidence if any such conversation had happened.”

In a video message, the legislator claimed that the allegation was part of a conspiracy against him by “people who were unhappy” that he was working on the ground around the year.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, CPI(M) Politburo member and Tripura Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary said the party looked into the allegations but found them to be untrue.

“This allegation is totally false and an attempt to malign the legislator concerned,” Chaudhury said.
