Agartala civic body to clear illegal roadside shops within 3 days: Mayor Dipak Majumder
“We are trying to give all possible facilities to residents. But we are not getting cooperation from most people. After the civic body was upgraded to the status of a corporation, we did not slap additional taxes on people,” Mayor Dipak Majumder said.

Ahead of Durga Puja, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Monday announced it will undertake a drive to evict illegal roadside shops within the next three days.
Mayor Dipak Majumder told reporters in Agartala that some shopkeepers illegally occupy roads, especially during Durga Puja, creating problems for pedestrians and vehicular movement alike.
“We had freed the road from encroachment all the way from Kamanchowmuhani to Battala along the Hariganga Basak Road. In the meantime, the shopkeepers have again started their businesses illegally. The CM also instructed us to keep the city clean and free from traffic congestion,” said Majumder after holding a meeting with traffic police officials, among others, at the civic headquarters in Agartala.
Meanwhile, Majumder also said they have decided to increase the deadline for paying property taxes by one month.
He added that nearly 30 per cent of property owners pay taxes on time while some clear dues only after getting notices.
“We are trying to give all possible facilities to residents. But we are not getting cooperation from most people. After the civic body was upgraded to the status of a corporation, we did not slap additional taxes on people,” he said.
Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is situated along the flood plains of River Haora. The city was founded in 1838 by the then Manikya monarch Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya Bahadur and the Agartala Municipality was formed in 1871 during the reign of Maharaja Chandra Manikya. The current population of Agartala city is estimated to be 5.51 lakh.
