Months after Sotheby’s sold The Mediterranean Blue diamond for $21.5 million in May, the auction house will bring The Glowing Rose — a 10.08-carat cushion brilliant-cut vivid pink diamond — under the hammer at its ‘High Jewelry’ sale to be held in Geneva on November 12.

Estimated to garner between $20 million-16 million Swiss Franc, the diamond named after its luminous and pure pink colour will be presented at its pre-auction viewings in a mount designed by British heritage jeweller, Boodles.

Unearthed in Angola, in the diamond-rich Lunda Norte region, this is reportedly the third vivid pink cushion cut diamond over 10 carats to come to market in 10 Years. A note accompanying the lot on the Sotheby’s website states, “The exact cause of the colour in pink diamonds is still not fully understood, further adding to their allure. There is no evidence that the colouration is due to a specific trace element such as nitrogen in yellow diamonds or boron in blue diamonds.

Early research suggested that manganese might be responsible for the pink hue, but this was later dispelled. Instead the colour is a result of stress at the atomic level… Due to the high pressure necessary during formation and their inherent structural irregularities, it is exceedingly rare to find a pink diamond larger than 10 carats that is also free from inclusions.”

In the past, several pink diamonds have sold for staggering amounts. If in 2018 Christie’s sold a 19-carat pink diamond for $50 million, in 2022 Sotheby’s Hong Kong sold The Williamson Pink Star (11.15 carat) for $57.7 million. The Eternal Pink (10.57 carats) sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2023 for $34.8 million. In 2017, Sotheby’s sold The CTF Pink Star (59.60 carat) for USD $71,175,926.
In a press release, Jessica Wyndham, Head of High Jewellery, Sotheby’s Geneva, noted, “With the current high global demand for rare coloured diamonds, the chance to offer The Glowing Rose, a superb and extremely rare coloured diamond, makes this auction moment truly exciting.”
