MUMBAI, April 15: Young Sports defeated Khalsa Gymkhana 6-4 in a fast-paced first-round match of the Bandra Gymkhana Open Rink hockey tournament, being conducted on the Gymkhana’s flood-lit courts, last night.

Young Sports got their goals through Deepak Koteyan, Yogesh Bhallu, C S Patil, Abdul Shakeel, Amin Sheikh and Pravin D’Souza. For Khalsa Gymkhana, Saini Hardeep Singh (3) and Aditya Menon sounded the boards.

In the second match of the day, Catholic Gymkhana got the better of last year’s winners Rebel Sports Club, winning 5-4.

Ryan Alphonso (2), Ashok Fernandes (2) and Valley Picardo scored for Catholic Gymkhana. Caylin Fernandes (2), George Esteeves and Ryan Vessaokar scored for Rebels.

In the last match of the night, Bombay Republicans, leading 3-0 at the breather, outplayed Bandra Gymkhana 7-3. Aldrin Bird (3), Lyndon (3) and Eves Bent scored for Republicans. Bandra Gymkhana got their goals through Reginald Pereira (2) and Gavin Aguiar.

Rajputs prevail

Rajputs just about overcamethe stiff challenge of Schools XI by a slender 8-7 margin in the St Peter’s Youth Centre hockey tournament, sponsored by Vijay Silk House and Coca-Cola, at the St Stanislaus High School ground, Bandra, today.

Sanjay Fernandes (3), Saby Noronha (2), R Pereira, Carl Lopez and V D’Souza were the goal-getters for the winners. Joshua La Croix (2), Gavin Aguiar (2), Kevin Vaz and Ashish Pandey scored for Schools XI.

Parel A in semis

Parel A bt Malad B 6-0 while Parel B defeated Bandra C 5-1 in the Suburbs City Areawise hockey tournament at St Andrew’s, Bandra today.

Holders Bandra A and Malad A are already in the semi-finals which will be held on April 25.
