LAHORE, NOVEMBER 19: England captain Nasser Hussain suffered a further injury blow as the first Test against Pakistan petered out to a draw here on Sunday.
England, who made 480-8 declared in their first innings, were 77-4 when Hussain declared the second innings to bring the match to an early end.
Pakistan were bowled out for 401 earlier in the day but realistic hopes of a positive result were effectively ended on Saturday when the home side avoided having to follow on.
Hussain, who underwent an X-ray examination on his back on Friday, was taken to hospital for a check after being struck on the right arm by a rising delivery from Wasim Akram.
The scan revealed Hussain had suffered heavy bruising but no fracture. Hussain said he was very satisfied with England’s performance in the first of a three-match series which many said they had no hoping of winning. “We have proved that we can play spin and we have made huge strides in this test,” said Hussain, holding his heavily strapped wrist.
“We bowled well and batted well to take up the challenge. But we will keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard and we are looking forward to the second Test at Faisalabad,” he said. The second Test starts on November 29.
Earlier, Yousuf Youhana, resuming on 77, went on to complete a hundred in the morning session as Pakistan added 68 runs to their overnight 333-8.
He was dismissed for 124 after putting on 127 for the ninth wicket with Man-of-the-Match Saqlain Mushtaq who was unbeaten with 32.
In their second innings, England lost left-handed opener Marcus Trescothick for one when he fell lbw to Akram. Hussain had been in for only three balls when he was struck on the right arm attempting to hook Akram.
Graham Thorpe, a centurion in the first innings, made five from 36 deliveries before cutting Saqlain Mushtaq to Abdur Razzaq at point.
England, 36-2 at Tea, soon lost opener Michael Atherton who was given out leg before to leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed when 20.
Graeme Hick was the last man out when leg-spinner Shahid Afridi bowled him for 14.
Pakistan captain Moin khan said: “Our boys did well to avert the follow-on. It was a good toss to win for England and they batted well with Thorpe showing the grit.
‘“I am extremely pleased with the performance of our boys especially Saqlain and Youhana.’
