The CPI today reminded the Congress it heads a minority government and needs Left support to remain in power.

Addressing a huge rally here to mark the start of AITUC’s 38th Congress, CPI leader A B Bardhan trained his guns on “some Congressmen” who, he said, seemed to forget that their party had only 145 seats.

The CPI leader added for good measure: “There is a Left-UPA front at the Centre. In the next stage there must be a Left and Democratic Front.” He added that the Left Democratic Front must evolve over time.

“Some Congressmen sometimes forget that they have only 145 MPs (in the Lok Sabha) and head a coalition. Congress netas should be careful because they don’t have 225 MPs and (the) 61 Left MPs have given them stability,” he said.

Bardhan said some Congress ministers should tread carefully for “they behave as if they are in a majority”. Samajhke chalo, sambhalke chalo… you don’t have a majority,” he warned.

The CPI leader said the Left was not imposing its policies on the United Progressive Alliance government but only wanted it to follow the National Common Minimum Programme. “We have 61 MPs and behave like 61 MPs,” he said but added that the Manmohan Singh government’s “stability” depended on Left support.
