External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha and US Secretary of State Colin Powell will discuss India’s recently announced peace initiatives and the visit of US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to the sub-continent in Moscow on May 14.

It is understood that while the meeting was planned before the PM announced measures towards normalising Indo-Pak ties, the recent developments will be the focus of the meeting.

‘‘They will be making use of the opportunity to discuss bilateral relations as well as other developments in connection with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage’s visit,’’ an MEA spokesperson said.

US Ambassador Robert Blackwill called on Sinha this evening to discuss Armitage’s visit. Sinha also informed the US envoy that India is still to decide on who the High Commissioner to Pakistan will be, but the process has already begun.

Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal told a TV channel that a High Commissioner will soon be appointed to Pakistan. Meanwhile, MEA officials said there has been no contact with the Pakistan High Commission here after the hand over of Vajpayee’s letter for Jamali.
