NEW DELHI, March 31: A non-governmental organisation today alleged that the fire in Yamuna Pushta here which killed nearly 30 people recently was a “man made” disaster and not an accident as it was made out to be.

Claiming that the residents of the slum were being harassed by the local police, the Indian Social Institute (ISI), which probed the March 14 incident, said there was a vast gap between the versions of the victims and those of the police and local leaders about the cause of the fire.

Releasing the report of the probe at a press conference, ISI executive director Albrose Pinto said, “There appears to be a close connection between the meeting to be held against police atrocities on the Bengali-speaking Muslim residents of the slum and the fire.”

He also claimed that the authorities gave compensation without any method. Pinto said the institute would take up the matter with the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The fire which broke out in Sanjay Amar Colony and Indira camp a fortnight ago claimed 29 lives and rendered thousands homeless.
