New Zealander Gordon Lindsay Weir, who was the world’s oldest surviving Test cricketer, has died in Auckland on Friday at the age of 95 and 151 days, New Zealand Cricket said on their official website.
Weir, always known as ‘Dad’, first played in New Zealand’s second Test against the touring MCC team in 1929-30. A right-handed bat and occasional right-arm medium pacer, he toured England in 1931 and 1937. Weir played 11 Tests scoring 416 runs at an average of 29.71.
The Wisden Cricinfo website said India’s MJ Gopalan, who played one Test in 1933-34 and is 94 years old had taken Weir’s mantle of oldest surviving Test player.
