Mamta Maben, the captain of the Indian women’s cricket squad which returned from Sri Lanka after a 5-0 victory, said she was disappointed that her team missed out on an opportunity to take on Pakistan at the Asia Cup which concluded in Colombo recently.
The Pakistan team withdrew from the three-nation one-day tournament at the last moment, ‘‘for reasons best known to them’’, as Maben put it.
Maben, who has been leading the side for over three seasons now, expressed her happiness over the team’s performance. ‘‘The team played with positive approach and the confidence level of our players has shown great improvement. The team is looking for greater laurels with an eye to clinch the World Cup in next March in South Africa.’’
Talking about their team strategy, Maben said, ‘‘We played our first eleven to win the series (3-0) and then tested our bench strength in the remaining matches. Not once did Sri Lanka cross the century mark in the matches. This series win has done a world of good to our confidence.’’
Top batswoman Anju Jain was in sparkling form and had an aggregate of over 200 runs, but Maben said, ‘‘Our fielding still remains a matter of concern but by the time the Australians visit India in November, this will also be sorted out.’’
She said the Sri Lankans were a much better team than the West Indies. ‘‘The Lankans caved in under pressure but their fielding was superb,’’ she said.
