NEW DELHI, July 20: The controversial constitutional amendment bill providing for 33 per cent reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and legislatures has been given top priority in the legislative business during the monsoon session of Parliament beginning July 23.
The bill, which was moved for consideration in the Lok Sabha amidst stiff opposition from members, particularly those belonging to the ruling Janata Dal on the last day of the budget session, is among over 50 legislations slated for enactment during the month-long session.
The ordinance for regularising the controversial out-of-turn allotment of government residences, promulgated on June 21, will also be taken up. This is also among the top priority legislations.
The legislative business for the session was decided last week at a meeting of secretaries of various departments, presided over by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Srikant Jena.
A constitution amendment bill providing for alternative scheme for devolution of central taxes to states as recommended by the Tenth Finance Commission has also been given priority rating. A bunch of legislations for amendment of Income Tax Act, for curbing money laundering and the Foreign Exchange Management Bill to replace Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) are among the significant bills the Finance Ministry proposes to push forward during the session.
