On May 17, 1977, two girls were born at the Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran, about 22 kilometres from here. The mother ,Harbans Kaur of Bandala, took one child home but threw the other into the bushes.
The dogs had just begun to sniff the newborn when some hospital staffers rescued her and notified the Medical Superintendent Dr S M Karanjia who took her home. Today, the baby is a 28-year-old Dimple who’s taken her biological mother to court for abandoning her.
In a civil suit filed in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal at Tarn Taran sub-division, Dimple has sought damages of Rs 10 lakh from her biological mother, and suitable punishment for literally throwing her to the dogs.
Dimple, now married and settled in Chandigarh, says her foster mother Dr Karanjia brought her up like her own daughter .
Her biological mother Harbans and father Giani Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Gorakhpur in UP, returned to stake claim after learning that their daughter was alive from some hospital officials.
‘‘I was thrilled when my mother approached me. But my joy evaporated when I discovered that she did not feel a morsel of regret for abandoning me. It was then that I decided to sue her under Section 33 (1) of the Indian Penal Code under which a child has the right to be reared by parents,’’ says Dimple, a computer expert, who has now made her father a party to the case.
The court has fixed July 20 as the next date of hearing, and ordered Dimple’s parents to appear before it.
