PUNE, Nov 3: The Deccan Gymkhana police have arrested four persons, including a police driver and two watchmen, from Modern College in Shivajinagar on charges of assaulting and raping a 35-year-old woman.
Police driver Balasaheb Bhimrao Gophane (28), a policeman’s son Shaikh Nadim Ismail (19), the watchmen Shankar Narayan Waje (20) and Yallappa Dadu Vaidu (20) were arrested after the woman lodged a first information report (FIR) against them at Deccan Gymkhana police station. Police Commissioner K K Kashyap issued orders suspending Gophane on Monday night.
The victim, who resides at Dhanori village on Pune-Alandi Road, was standing near the Shivajinagar ST terminus around 11.30 pm on Sunday when Gophane and Shaikh approached her.
According to the FIR, Gophane and Shaikh took the woman to the college ground on a scooter. The victim claimed that the four did not allow her to leave the ground till early on Monday morning. She also alleged that Gophane thrashed her with a stick when she refused to cooperate with them.
The victim said they threatened to kill her if she lodged a complaint before allowing her to leave around 4.30 a.m. on Monday.
The woman approached the police at Shivajinagar chowki and lodged the FIR. The four were arrested immediately.
