MUMBAI, APRIL 28: A female member of the Chotta Shakeel gang was arrested by the Crime Branch on Tuesday for alleged possession of two live cartridges. Shabana Shamim Shaikh (22), reportedly among the several women hired by Chhota Shakeel, procured arms and ammunition for the gang.

Shaikh was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody till May 7.

Unit II of the Crime branch got a tip-off that an arms and ammunition deal was to be brokered at the main gate of Maharashtra College, Nagpada. A trap was laid outside the college and at around 5.45 pm, Shaikh (22), clad in a burkha, was spotted carrying a polythene bag.

At around 6.15 pm, two persons arrived on the spot and approached her, but fled before the police could nab them. Shaikh’s polythene bag was found to contain a dupatta and two cartridges wrapped in a newspaper.

Shaikh told the police that she worked for Imran alias Mohsin alias Raju Suleman Lavekar, who is wanted inseveral extortion cases. Shaikh was to receive five pistols and some money from Imran, to be distributed to gang members at Santacruz and Mumbra later.

In another incident, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs arrested a woman for possession of 10 gold bars valued at Rs 5.17 lakh. According to the remand application, Chetna Blaze Gomes was intercepted by AIU officials on arrival from Muscat. Gold bars were found concealed in a toy car and tape recorder in her luggage. Gomes was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer on Wednesday and released on a bail of Rs 50,000.
