A middle-aged woman has been killed in unprovoked and indiscriminatePakistani shelling in north Kashmir.

A shell landed in the compound of one Mohammad Ismail in Karnah in Kupwaradistrict on Saturday, killing his wife Lali Jan and damaging his house,official source said here on Sunday.

Intermittent shelling from across the border has been continuing for thelast two days in Karnah and Uri in Baramulla district, they said.

Indian troops fired in retaliation to silence the Pakistani guns and reportsof intermittent firing from both sides were still coming, the sources said.

They said Pakistani troops apparently targeted Indian positions along theline of control with the intention to push armed militants into the valleyunder the cover of shelling. Indian troops have intensified patrolling tofrustrate their designs.
