Four days after the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) expelled him for six years, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today described the decision as “suicidal” for the party, and appealed to the leadership to withdraw it.
“I have been holding the flag of regionalism since my student days. If somebody wants to throw me out, it is like pumping out blood from my body,” Mahanta, who today held the first press conference after his expulsion, said.
He refused to identify the “forces” he had yesterday accused of working for his ouster and “alerted” the AGP leadership against any Congress attempt to weaken the party.
Mahanta asserted he was still a member of the AGP. “I have not received any communication regarding my expulsion. Nor have I been informed about the specific allegations against me. I am very much a member and MLA of the party,” he said.
He refused to say whether he intended to split the party.
