PUNE, JULY 19: The Wanowrie police claimed to have busted a drug racket with the arrest of two persons, last afternoon. Brown sugar worth Rs 1,30,000 has been recovered from them.Acting on a tip off, the detection branch of the Wanowrie police station swung into action and set up an elaborate trap. The police had received information that two persons would be travelling from Golibar Maidan to Kondhwa with a consignment of drugs. Constables were posted on both sides of the road near the Lullanagar-Wanowrie chowk on the road to Kondhwa. Police sub-inspector Jaan Mohammed Pathan along with other constables stationed himself at strategic points.The duo was travelling in a 118 NE (MH-15-A-1817) from Golibar Maidan towards Kondhwa. As soon as the car was sighted the police party moved in and cornered the vehicle. Shaheed Ahmed Khan (25), a resident of Laxminagar, Yerawada and his accomplice Feroz Yusuf Khan (21), a resident of Bhimpuri Galli, were arrested.The police have recovered 1.310 kg brown sugar and also confiscated the 118 NE. A mobile phone was also seized from them.According to assistant commissioner P R Dighavkar the amount recovered was a significant one. ``It is too early to make any speculation as the accused are being remanded to police custody on Sunday. We have formed an interrogation team and we will try to establish the source of the brown sugar. This is a serious offence and the accused can be awarded a sentence of rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine.''Meanwhile, the police are conducting further investigations and hope to establish any links that the accused could have with the underworld or a bigger drug trafficking ring.
