With much fanfare, the Lucknow University (LU) celebrated its 87th Foundation Day on Tuesday.

Chief guest Justice Pradeep Kant, an alumnus of the university, called upon the students and teachers to follow the civic rules.

“Quite often, people do not care about the rules. The courts have to intervene even in issues like dumping garbage in a river,” he said.

The university began as a primary school in 1862 when the taluqdars of Awadh decided to establish a school, as a tribute to Viceroy Lord Canning.

By 1864, it grew into a high school with over 200 boys attending it and was soon raised to the status of a college known as Canning College.
