JOHANNESBURG, July 13: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela threw her weight behind the party for which ex-husband Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s President, spent 27 years in apartheid jails, squashing reports she was set to quit.

"I am the ANC and I will die as the ANC," the controversial "mother of the nation" said in a statement sent to the Sapa News Agency yesterday. She was referring to the ruling African National Congress, which swept to victory in first all-race elections in 1994 with 62 per cent of the votes.
