Hyderabad, March 13: On a day of intense battle between the bat and the ball, Hyderabad came back strongly to wrest the initiative from Vadodra in the Ranji Trophy Group `C’ super-league match at the Gymkhana here today. The visitors, electing to bat, were 189 for five in 89.1 overs on the first day of the four-day match.

But left-handed opener Connors William was the saddest player on the day. Six short of a well-deserved century, he was tragically run out in the last over of the day. William cut medium-pacer Vanka Pratap uppishly to point where a tired Narenderpal Singh was late to the ball. But the opener, in a sudden rush of blood, rushed to non-striker’s end even as Tushar Arothe was not interested in the run. It was too late. He slipped. He made a desperate attempt to return to the crease but this time NP Singh made no mistake with an accurate throw to wicketkeeper Youraj Singh who had a simple task.

William walked back dejectedly. His 94 (11×4, 1×6, 259b) which came in 370 minute stay at the creasegave hopes of a big Vadodra total. With the wicket playing easy, it required extra effort from the Hyderabad bowlers to contain the Vadodra batsmen. Off-spinner Kanwaljit Singh and left-arm spinner R Sridhar, did a commendable job to keep the batsmen on a tight leash.

Kanwaljit had all the batsmen in trouble with his varying line and length but yet again the mishits went to no-man’s land or his confident shouts for bat and pad chances were negatived by umpire Rajan Seth. He was able to get one wicket when he beat Satyajit Parab on the sweep shot.
