
Barely four months after he bagged an award for initiatives to protect migratory birds, a wildlife activist was arrested on the charge of poaching birds from Orissa8217;s Chilka Lake.
Dibakar Behera, president of Sri Sri Mahavir Pakshi Suraksha Samiti, an organisation working for the cause of protection of birds, was arrested for violating Wildlife Protection Act at Tangi near Chilka lake, forest officials said.
8220;Twelve migratory birds, including exotic varieties of Gadwall and Shoveller, were seized from him,8221; said Divisional Forest Officer DFO of Chilka, Abhimanyu Behera.
The arrest came four months after the state Government gave Behera the prestigious Biju Patnaik Award for contribution to protection of migratory birds. The wildlife award winner has been sent to judicial custody after the court rejected his bail application, the DFO said.
