MARCH 17: Sonubai Kapadne, wife of shop owner Sukhdev Kapadne who was killed in the police firing at Ramabai Nagar last year, told the Gundewar commission on Tuesday that her husband was gunned down by the SRP jawans despite raising his hands in the air.
The witness said during cross-examination by counsel for the Commission Vijay Pradhan that on July 11, 1997 at around 6.30 am after going outdoors for about 5-6 minutes, her husband asked her to shut the shop as he saw the bust of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar garlanded with chappals.
She said that her husband closed the shop and went towards the bust where a large number of people had gathered. Sonubai said that she went to her neighbours from where she could see what was happening. Just then her daughter came and told Sonubai that her father is sitting inside the police van.
Frightened by the news, Sonubai walked towards Buddhavihar accompanied by her daughter. She said that she saw an SRP van stationed on the highway with five to six jawans armed withrifles. “At that point I saw Sukhdev walking with both his hands raised,” she said.
The witness said that later an elderly man Shivcharan was seen carrying his son Mangesh who was killed in the firing followed by a lady. Sonubai said that she saw her husband talking to Shivcharan and suddenly an SRP jawan fired on her husband’s chest as a result of which he fell. She said that she received a compensation of Rs three lakh from the government.
