Wife of Eral rape convict to fight BJP

.

Shanta Parmar, wife of Eral rape and murder convict Chandrakant Parmar, will take on the BJP in Kalol. A Bharatiya Janshakti Party nominee, Parmar is the first member of a riot-tainted family to enter the electoral fray.

Chandrakant Parmar, alias Kahabhai Dada, is serving a life term for rioting, rape and murder. He is a former BJP taluka panchayat president, whom his party dumped after the verdict on October 31 this year. The Parmar family, sources said, was now fighting the BJP as an act of defiance that it could not “save” a loyalist from being convicted.

Parmar filed her papers on Wednesday afternoon at the Godhra election office. She was accompanied by her supporters, family members and grandson Shailendra, who is also her campaign manager.

Shailendra said there was no official word from Uma Bharati about not contesting the elections. “However, it would not have mattered to us because my grandmother will fight come what may. Bharati had approached us in the first place,” he said.

“The BJP does not seem interested in us. Besides, there are a lot of things in Kalol that need improvement. We believe we can deliver,” he said.
