The International Olympic Committee’s Evaluation Commission, which examined five candidate cities for the 2012 Olympic Games, released on Monday its 123-page report. Two cities got good marks, two average and one can be deemed to have failed the test. The crucial vote to decide which city stages the Games will be in Singapore on July 6
WHAT THE REPORT SAID
PARIS: Praised Paris’s excellent accommodation proposal, high capacity and quality metropolitan road and rail transport systems plus its ‘‘well-documented and achievable’’ budget
LONDON: The budget was ‘‘well supported and achievable’’ and its bid ‘‘indicated a high level of planning’’. Transport demands would be met provided ‘‘the substantial programme of public transport improvements is fully delivered before 2012’’.
NEW YORK: ‘‘The Olympic Stadium…essential to the hosting of the Games, (was) still in progress at the time of the Commission’s visit and no guarantees were provided that (it) would be available for the construction of Olympic infrastructure.’’
MADRID: Criticised over a lack of hotel rooms close to the Games site. ‘‘Madrid may need to use hotels in cities approximately one hour away in order to meet Olympic requirements,’’ the report said.
MOSCOW: ‘‘A lack of detailed planning in the candidature file…made it difficult for the Commission to evaluate the project.’’
THE REACTIONS
MOSCOW: Bid committee praised the report as ‘‘open, objective and positive’’. ‘‘we are satisfied because it reflects the achievements and the opportunities that exist in front of each candidate’’, said bid official Alexander Chernov
LONDON: ‘‘Overall, this is a great springboard for the last 30 days of the campaign’’, said its bid leader Seb Coe. ‘‘I am particularly pleased that the Evaluation Commission recognises the work that has been done on transport and public support.’’
NEW YORK: Dan Doctoroff, NYC deputy mayor and NYC2012 founder said: ‘‘We are absolutely delighted by the IOC’s Evaluation Commission report today. The report makes clear that this race is neck and neck and that New York is firmly in the top tier.’’
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The report will be sent to the 114 voting members of the IOC, 100 of whom will be eligible to vote in the July 6 vote in Singapore. It is meant to be a guide for the voters
THE ODDS
London bookmakers cut London’s odds to 11-4 from 3-1. Paris remains strong favourite to stage the Games at 1-4.
