Mohammedmian Soomro, a former international banker and confidante of President Pervez Musharraf, who was sworn in as caretaker Premier on Friday, faces the tough task of guiding emergency-ruled Pakistan through general election amidst the deepening political crisis.

Soomro, 57, is a member of the ruling PML-Q party and was elected to the Senate in February 2003 and became its chairman a month later. He hails from a renowned political family of Sindh province that has been active in public life since 1923.

He is also head of the well-known Soomro tribe, according to his biography on the Senate website.

“He is known for his strong interpersonal and leadership skills. He is well acquainted with national and socio-political and economic issues and has vast exposure to political life since his college days,” it states.

His father, late Ahmed Mian Soomro, was Deputy Speaker of the West Pakistan Assembly and a member of the Senate.

Born on August 19, 1950, Soomro studied science in Pakistan and the US.

He has held key positions in several financial institutions, including the Bank of America, International Bank of Yemen and Faysal Islamic Bank of Bahrain.

Soomro headed the state-owned National Bank of Pakistan before plunging into active politics and was instrumental in establishing micro-credit banking in the country.

He began his political career after being appointed as Governor of Sindh in 2000.

He resigned as Governor in December 2002 to contest elections to the Senate.

He was elected chairman of the Senate in March 2003 and re-elected to the same post in March 2006.

Soomro and other members of the interim set-up were administered the oath of office by Musharraf at Aiwan-e-Sadr or presidency on Friday during a ceremony attended by a large number of dignitaries.
