When the monsoon fury flooded Mumbai, it hit almost everyone—including the man who could bring the city to a standstill by just raising a finger.

On Wednesday, when the water level was waist-high on the streets in Bandra’s Kala Nagar and threatened to enter Matoshree, Bal Thackeray’s residence, the Sena chief was evacuated to a safer place—his nephew Raj Thackeray’s residence in Dadar.

Thackeray was taken out of his house on a dinghy, an inflatable boat, to the Bandra-Kurla road where a car was waiting for him. The whole operation took about 15 minutes—and after a 17-minute drive, the Sena chief was safe at his nephew’s Dadar home.

‘‘It was nearing dusk on Wednesday when I saw some people dragging a boat through chest-high water,’’ said a Kala Nagar resident. ‘‘Later, I saw eight men bringing out Thackeray and two children on the dinghy, which was being pushed through the water towards the main gate of Kala Nagar.’’

When contacted, members of the Thackeray family refused to comment. Thackeray’s son, Uddhav, said: ‘‘It happened three days ago and my father was safely taken to Raj’s house. He is still living with Raj and I am busy constituting a team of doctors to help the flood-hit people.’’
