Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be updated and used to deal with illegal migration from Bangladesh. He also clarified that neither the Centre nor the state were contemplating challenging the Supreme Court order scrapping the IMDT (Illegal Migration Determination by Tribunal) Act.

The register, Gogoi said, would have names of those who came to India before March 24, 1971, and their descendants.

Addressing a press conference here, Gogoi said he would personally monitor cases that were sent to the Foreigners Act Tribunal and ensure that genuine citizens were not harassed. Gogoi denied that chances of his re-election had been affected because of the SC order. “I have not been voted to power by foreigners,” he said.

Gogoi accepted that IMDT Act was unsuccessful in dealing with illegal migration. He was, however, quick to clarify that it was the shortage of judges that made the Act ineffective.

The Group of Ministers constituted after the Supreme Court order, Gogoi said, would examine how best can illegal migrants from Bangladesh be detected and deported.
