Ahead of his proposed Long March,a defiant former Prime Minister and PML(N) leader Nawaz Sharif said this could be Pakistan’s “defining moment”. Speaking to The Indian Express after his speech at Abbotabad in NWFP,he sounded equally despondent and upbeat.

• On President Asif Ali Zardari: Uska dimaag kaam nahin kar raha. Pata nahin woh kaun say doston ki talaash mein hai (He is not in his senses. I don’t know what friends he is looking for). He should fulfil his commitment because democracy is the only path a politician should follow.

• On the Long March: PPP imposed Section 144,which the people have shattered into 288 pieces. The Government wasn’t expecting this kind of a response.

• On Ashfaq Kayani and the likelihood of a military coup: As far as I know him,he’s a decent, professional soldier with zero political intentions or ambitions. I don’t foresee any takeover from his side. (Asked if he would support Kayani) I can’t support anything undemocratic, you know that. I am a victim of such misadventures

• On the relationship between Zardari and PM Yousuf Raza Gilani: Yes,I am privy to the grapevine. Gilani made some comforting statements for PML(N) when Governor’s Rule was imposed in Punjab a few weeks back. But I believe he hardly has any say in the Government. I have no personal animosity with Zardari but his dictatorial modus operandi. He is responsible for plunging the country into numerous crises. Even his party doesn’t agree with his ways. Four days back, one of our very credible polls has announced that 58 per cent of PPP members rejected the do number ki judgment handed out by the do number ka Supreme Court of Pakistan. PPP members will very soon realise that Zardari’s politics is leading to Pakistan’s debacle.

• On US role: How does America come into the picture? It’s an internal matter and we can and should handle it ourselves.

• On Pervez Musharraf’s statement that he could be a useful President: He is irrelevant. Come here and ask any person walking on the street and he’ll tell you if Musharraf is welcome in Pakistan’s politics anymore. I need not comment.” (On his recent trip to India,Sharif said, with a laugh: “Pata nahin aap aisey logon ko bula kar itni ehmiyat kyun detein hain (I don’t understand why does India accord importance to such people by inviting them).

• On the threat of his house arrest: Yes,that’s on the cards. It can’t be ruled out as the Government has arrested many office bearers and workers of our party. Why would they exonerate my brother and me?
