Kobad Ghandy, the arrested Politburo member of banned outfit CPI(Maoist),was sent to police custody till October 8 by a city court on Monday,as the Delhi Police claimed he carried out criminal activities using nine fake names and was found setting up a base for Naxal activities in the national capital.
Allowing the remand application that sought custodial interrogation of Ghandy for unravelling designs of the Naxal leadership,Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja sent the 59-year-old Ghandy to custody for three days.
The police argued that Ghandy, who has been arrested under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being a member of the banned organisation, was living at a rented accommodation in south Delhi and working to set up a base for Naxalites. The police claimed to have recovered materials, including CDs and a laptop from Ghandy, who allegedly carried nine fake names like Dilip Patel,Narsi,Arvind,Rajan,Katif Ansari and others. The police told the court that Ghandy
had to be taken to Mumbai to verify certain facts.
Ghandy, who had no lawyer, opted to argue the case himself but remained mostly quiet in court. Earlier,to queries from reporters,he said: I think it is an exaggeration by the state that a person who writes for Maoists can be termed as a big catch.
Ghandy, who is reportedly in charge of expanding the banned organisations influence in urban areas, was arrested on September 21 by the special cell of the Delhi Police. He is suffering from prostate cancer and cardiac problems.
Ghandy was in the top echelons of the erstwhile CPI-ML (Peoples War group) from 1981 and then became a Central Committee member of the CPI(Maoist). He was elected to CPI(Maoist) Politburo in 2007.
Meanwhile,Delhi Police sources said Ghandy had been meeting a student and two businessmen at various places in the city for the last few months here. Ghandy is reported to have told them that he did not know the original names of his contacts and that he knew them by their aliases. The sleuths are hunting for these three persons whose mobile phone numbers have been obtained from Ghandy.
