Victory and shock at emmys

Mad Men,Modern Family win big at 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards,but elsewhere it was out with the old and in with the new

THE EXPECTED

Modern Family took five awards,including best comedy for the second consecutive year. Mad Men received its fourth consecutive Emmy for the best drama. Fox musical comedy Glee won just two Emmys,both in creative arts categories,while HBO’s lavish Boardwalk Empire won seven of its eight Emmys in last week’s technical awards section. Its only win late Sunday went to director Martin Scorsese.

DEFYING PREDICTIONS

Little-seen but critically admired football drama Friday Night Lights won for best writing and its star Kyle Chandler beat favourites Jon Hamm and Steve Buscemi for best dramatic actor. Melissa McCarthy won lead comedy actress at her first shot for the romantic comedy Mike & Molly. Emmy rookie Peter Dinklage won for his turn as Tyrion in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Julianna Margulies,star of The Good Wife on CBS,won for best dramatic actress,Jim Parsons was a rare repeat for comedy The Big Bang Theory.

British stars leave mark

Kate Winslet won her first Emmy for her lead role in HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith claimed the supporting actress title in miniseries

Sheen and Kutcher bond

Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher,the former and current stars of Two And A Half Men bonded behind the scenes. Sheen tweeted a photo of Kutcher speaking to him,Hollywood Reported said. “Giving the new kid a little advice,” Sheen wrote.

Alec Baldwin boycotts event

Alec Baldwin boycotted the show after the event’s broadcaster refused to air his joke about the phone-hacking scandal at News of the World. He said he was disappointed Fox,owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp,edited his opening address.
