The District Election Office of Ramabai Nagar is installing global positioning system (GPS) devices in vehicles of polling officers for better election management. The Chief Electoral Office wants to implement the idea in other districts, but it may not be possible in the upcoming election. Officials said the GPS system would be particularly useful on polling day. The moment the DEOs control room receives information about any disturbance at a polling booth, officials will locate through GPS the vehicles of flying squads and police teams that are closest to the spot and alert them. The technology will help the district administration in case of a technical snag in electronic voting machines. Before the polls, the facility will help the administration in rushing police to a place where there are complaints, like distribution of liquor or money to influence voters. GPS-installed vehicles will enable us to control any situation in the shortest possible time. The sector officers and police officials will be rushed immediately to the problem area, said District Election Officer Mayur Maheshwari. He said the GPS devices were being installed in the vehicles of every sector officer, returning officer, additional district magistrate amongst others.
